Carys Lloyd Secures Stunning Sprint Victory at Tour of Brugge
British teenager Carys Lloyd (Movistar) achieved her first professional victory at the Tour of Brugge, holding off former world champion Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) in a thrilling sprint finish. Nienke Veenhoven (Visma-Lease a Bike) completed the podium, securing third place.
The 19-year-old Lloyd, who was the youngest rider in the World Tour peloton in 2025, powered through in the final 200 meters, leaving Balsamo unable to respond. The race, characterized by challenging weather conditions including wind, rain, and hail, saw a chaotic sprint finish after a largely controlled peloton.
A Chaotic Sprint Finish
With 500 meters remaining, the race devolved into an all-out sprint as lead-out trains dissolved. Lloyd seized the opportunity, launching her sprint 200 meters from the finish line. Balsamo, despite a strong lead-out from her team, found herself blocked and unable to react in time.
“With about 500 metres to go all the sprinters were left with no leadouts so it was everyone for themselves,” said Lloyd. “I saw 200 metres to go and thought I just had to go and see what happened and it worked. We spoke about it in the bus as a little bit of a joke. My mechanic was like, ‘I’ll seize you to the Lego store, and you can buy anything if you win’, as a joke, but now, I was like, ‘oh my God, I’ve actually won’.”
Team Strategies and Race Dynamics
Visma-Lease a Bike attempted to control the race by massing at the front with over 10km to go, while Lidl-Trek opted for a more conservative approach, waiting until the final kilometers to position Balsamo. Despite efforts to create echelons due to strong winds, the peloton remained largely intact throughout the 144km race.
Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime), a pre-race favorite, finished ninth after being boxed in during the sprint. A crash within the final 2.3km of the race impacted several riders, including Zoe Backstedt (18th) and sisters Elynor and Millie Couzens.
Post-Race Reactions
Elisa Balsamo acknowledged her team’s strong lead-out but lamented being unable to capitalize in the final moments. “It was our goal to fight for the podium. We approached the sprint in a good way; we started to come together really early and take the lead in the front. From then, I surfed a bit on the Lidl-Trek train, and I was a bit boxed in but I am happy that I could identify a way out and finish it off for the girls with a podium.”
Nienke Veenhoven expressed satisfaction with her third-place finish, marking her first WorldTour classic podium. “Third place is definitely a solid result to build on. I head into In Flanders Fields – In Wevelgem on Sunday with a good feeling,” Veenhoven added.
