Dr. John Haanen: Pioneering Cancer Immunotherapy

Dr. John Haanen is a leading figure in the field of cancer immunotherapy, dedicated to harnessing the power of the immune system to fight cancer. His research focuses on developing novel vaccination and cellular strategies, translating these advancements into clinical trials to improve patient outcomes. Dr. Haanen’s career spans decades of groundbreaking work at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC).

Early Life and Education

John Haanen received his MD cum laude in 1988 after studying Medicine at the University of Leiden, following a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. He then pursued a PhD in Immunohematology and Blood Bank at the LUMC, collaborating with Prof. Hergen Spits and making the first demonstration of Th1 cells in humans – specifically, Mycobacterium-specific CD4+ T cells. His early research also involved participation in foundational studies on interleukin-10 (IL-10) at DNAX, Research Institute in Palo Alto, California.

Career and Research at NKI and LUMC

Following his PhD in 1991, Dr. Haanen completed his training in internal medicine before joining the NKI as a post-doctoral fellow from 1997 to 1999. During this time, he collaborated with Ada Kruisbeek and Ton Schumacher on preclinical tumor and viral immunology models. In 2001, he established his own research group at the NKI-AVL, focusing on the development of innovative cancer treatment strategies.

In 2008, Dr. Haanen was appointed professor of translational immunotherapy of cancer at LUMC. He served as Head of the Division of Medical Oncology at NKI until July 2018, and currently holds the position of Leader of the research theme Immunotherapy at NKI. His research group is actively investigating biomarkers to predict response to immune checkpoint inhibitors and developing new cell therapy approaches. Learn more about his research group.

Leadership and Contributions to the Field

Dr. Haanen’s influence extends beyond his research and clinical roles. He was chair of the Working Party Immunotherapy for Oncology from 2008 to 2016. Within the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), he served as scientific chair of the ESMO IO meeting from 2016-2019 and as scientific chair of the ESMO 2020 annual meeting. Currently, he is the Editor-in-Chief of ESMO Journal IOTECH, starting in 2018. Read his biography on the ESMO website.

Immunotherapy Breakthroughs and Future Directions

Dr. Haanen’s work is rooted in the significant advancements in immunotherapy, particularly the success of immune checkpoint inhibitors in treating a growing number of cancers – currently up to 14 types. His research aims to build upon these breakthroughs by refining patient selection for immunotherapy and advancing the development of cell-based therapies. Explore his work on cancer immunotherapy.

Collaborations

Dr. Haanen frequently collaborates with other leading researchers in the field, including Ton Schumacher, whose group focuses on cancer immunology. Learn more about the Ton Schumacher Group.
