Rahul Gandhi Credits Priyanka Gandhi for Making Amit Shah Smile in Lok Sabha

During a special session of Parliament on Friday, April 17, 2026, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi praised his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, for achieving something in just five minutes that he said he had not managed in two decades of political life: making Home Minister Amit Shah smile.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi recalled watching Priyanka Gandhi’s speech from the previous day, during which she engaged in light-hearted banter with Amit Shah while discussing the delimitation and women’s reservation bills. He said, “Yesterday I was watching my sister (Priyanka, who spoke in Lok Sabha on Thursday) achieve something in five minutes that I have not been able to in, maybe, 20 years of our political career, which was to make (home minister) Amit Shah ji smile.”

His remarks drew laughter across party lines. Rahul Gandhi added that he felt proud as her older brother and expressed a desire to learn from her ability to engage opponents with wit and grace.

The moment he referenced occurred when Priyanka Gandhi, during her speech on the bills seeking to increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to a maximum of 850 to reserve one-third for women, made a pointed yet humorous comment. She suggested that even the ancient political strategist Chanakya would be “shocked” by the BJP’s “political scheming,” prompting a smile from Amit Shah and other treasury bench members.

Although neither Priyanka Gandhi nor Amit Shah was physically present in the chamber at the exact time of Rahul’s remarks—Priyanka had spoken the day before and was not in the hall when he spoke—her earlier exchange had clearly made an impression, prompting widespread reaction and discussion.

Rahul Gandhi likewise used the occasion to reflect on a story from their grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, about overcoming fear, framing Priyanka’s confident demeanor as an extension of that legacy.

The exchange highlighted a rare moment of cross-party rapport amid intense legislative debate over electoral reform and gender representation in India’s Parliament.
