Il Palace of Westminsterthe historic seat of the British Parliament, is at risk of structural collapse. The options on the table for its restoration include costs of up to 50 billion euros and times that could extend up to 61 years old. According to the Restoration and Renovation (R&R) program plans, the longest and most expensive solution would involve temporarily clearing only the House of Lords, while the work would be carried out in phases over six decades.
The alternative, considered safer and cheaper, involves the complete movement of deputies and peers for a maximum of dthe 24 years starting from 2032, with an estimated cost of up to 15.6 billion sterline. While awaiting a final decision – expected by mid-2030 – Parliament has already allocated up to £3 billion for preliminary works over the next seven years: These include temporary accommodation for MPs and staff, as well as a new pier on the Thames to facilitate deliveries. The picture is alarming.
Since 2016 they have occurred 36 fires, 12 asbestos-related incidents and 19 structural failures.
