Fatal Standoff in Rapides Parish

Federal prosecutors have charged 48-year-old Louisiana resident Clarence A. Frazier Jr. with the murder of a deputy U.S. marshal. The officer, identified as Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson, was fatally shot on July 13 while assisting in the execution of an arrest warrant at a residence in Rapides Parish. Frazier, of Alexandria, remains in custody following the incident.

The Execution of an Arrest Warrant

The incident began when members of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office arrived at Frazier’s residence to serve an arrest warrant. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana, the warrant was issued after Frazier failed to appear in state court to face a charge of sexual battery of a person with infirmities.

The Execution of an Arrest Warrant

After law enforcement officers announced their presence and forced entry into the home, authorities say Frazier barricaded himself inside a bedroom. He then allegedly opened fire on the officers, striking Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson. A standoff ensued, ending with Frazier’s arrest. Hanson later died from his injuries.

Maximum Penalties Under Federal Law

Frazier faces a federal charge of murder of a federal officer. This charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison or the death penalty upon conviction.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the defendant will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing as federal prosecutors prepare the case for trial.
