A Sweet Tradition: Cukrárna Lucie in Prague’s Žižkov District

Hartigova Street in Prague’s Žižkov neighborhood is known for its vibrant energy, but nestled within it lies a charming surprise: Cukrárna Lucie, a traditional Czech pastry shop. For 35 years, this establishment has been delighting locals and visitors with its classic desserts, custom cakes, and warm atmosphere.

A Family Legacy

Lucie Zrucká, the owner, carries on a family tradition of confectionery. Inspired by her grandfather, a confectioner in the 1950s, she opened her first pastry shop in 1991. Cukrárna Lucie moved to its current location on Hartigova Street in 1993 and has remained there ever since. Zrucká previously worked as a medical laboratory assistant and gained experience at Ovocné Světozor before pursuing her passion.

From Minor Beginnings to a Local Favorite

The pastry shop began modestly, with Lucie working alongside her cousin, and aunt. The team grew to 24 employees and six apprentices at its peak, and now consists of thirteen people, including delivery drivers. While direct sales in the shop are important, the primary business is production and delivery to restaurants, cafes, and companies, with approximately ten to twenty deliveries made daily.

Classic Czech Desserts and Custom Creations

Cukrárna Lucie specializes in classic Czech desserts like spiky, Indians, wreaths, pinwheels, and tights. They also create custom cakes for various occasions, including children’s parties and weddings. The shop also offers lighter cakes with fruit and yogurt, adapting to modern tastes.

Affordable Prices and a Retro Charm

Despite rising costs, Cukrárna Lucie maintains relatively affordable prices, with cakes often available for around 80 Czech crowns, compared to over 140 crowns at some modern cafes. Zrucká attributes this to using high-quality ingredients like real eggs and animal cream, and baking everything on-site. The shop’s retro atmosphere, which Zrucká says customers encourage her to preserve, adds to its unique appeal.

A Boost from Social Media

A video featuring the pastry shop by influencer Luboš Bailador on Instagram brought unexpected attention and new customers. Cukrárna Lucie’s Facebook page showcases its offerings and community engagement.

Looking Ahead

Lucie Zrucká acknowledges the challenges facing the confectionery industry, including a shortage of skilled workers. While the future of Cukrárna Lucie is uncertain, she remains dedicated to her craft and the joy it brings to her customers. “I would do it again,” she says, reflecting on her 35 years in the business. “I definitely don’t regret anything.”
