Villa Vie Odyssey Stranded in Sihanoukville After Fuel Costs Surge

More than 200 residents of the residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey are stranded in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, after the ship’s operator halted operations due to a dramatic surge in global fuel prices. The disruption leaves permanent and long-term passengers scrambling for temporary housing while the company faces mounting financial pressure.

The suspension was announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, by Florida-based operator Villa Vie Residences. Company executives informed passengers that monthly fuel costs per cabin in certain Asian regions had escalated from $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000. The sharp spike stems from oil supply disruptions following conflicts in the Middle East, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Financial Strain Forces Sudden Evacuation in Cambodia

Passengers received little warning before being ordered to disembark the nearly 200-meter vessel. CEO Kathy Villaba sent a notification to residents shortly after 7:00 a.m. local time, giving them a strict deadline of 2:00 p.m. to leave the ship. Long Dimanche, Vice Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, confirmed that 203 passengers and 156 crew members were onboard when the crisis hit.

Several passengers expressed shock and dismay over the sudden halt. Steve Skulnich told Channel News Asia that the operator ran out of funds entirely and even requested extra money from travelers to reach the next port, though passengers refused.

Global Voyage Interrupted

The Villa Vie Odyssey originally departed from Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024, embarking on a planned 3.5-year circumnavigation covering roughly 150 countries. The ship offered permanent and long-term residential leases ranging from $120,000 for interior units up to $440,000 for villa suites, alongside monthly rental options starting at $3,500.

Prior to the shutdown, the company attempted to mitigate rising expenses by slowing down travel speeds and extending port stopovers. These conservation efforts failed to cover widening operational losses. Pamela Reckamp, a former cabin renter, recalled an earlier September meeting where representatives warned that without a $1 million cash injection to leave Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, the ship would lose power within days.

Restructuring Plans and Future Uncertainty

In response to the financial collapse, Villa Vie Residences announced plans to restructure its debt and seek new capital within a 60-day window. Company leadership is also weighing a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in the United States to safeguard operations. Concurrently, the operator proposed a $500 monthly surcharge to residents to help cover inflated overhead, though the proposal met stiff resistance from displaced travelers.

While some passengers have managed to book flights out of Cambodia, many others remain housed in various hotels around Sihanoukville waiting for clarity. Russ Borman told CNN Indonesia that many residents liquidated their homes in countries like the United States and Australia to live permanently at sea, leaving them with nowhere else to go while the company attempts its financial turnaround.

Additional Passenger Accounts and Financial Hurdles

Other travelers shared similar disbelief as the sudden shutdown unfolded. Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin described the heartbreaking moment as the reality of the situation set in, noting that despite long-standing awareness of company financial struggles, the actual arrival of the crisis brought deep shock and tears among residents. Holly Hennessey also recounted adjusting to an unexpected stay in Sihanoukville, noting that the city was never a place she imagined spending an extended period while waiting in a local hotel.

Before ever leaving Northern Ireland, the vessel faced initial hurdles, enduring a four-month departure delay in Belfast that cost the company millions of pounds. Beyond fuel inflation, court records show Villa Vie Residences previously faced legal action regarding allegations of providing misleading statements about its financial health, an accusation the firm has denied.
