Asus Co-CEO Calls Apple’s MacBook Neo a ‘Shock’ to the PC Industry

The launch of Apple’s $599 MacBook Neo has sent ripples through the PC industry, prompting a response from manufacturers and sparking discussions about competitive strategies. Asus co-CEO S.Y. Hsu described the latest MacBook as a “shock” to the entire PC market, particularly given Apple’s historical focus on premium pricing.

A New Competitive Landscape

Traditionally, Windows PC makers haven’t directly competed with Apple in the lower price segments of the laptop market. But, the MacBook Neo’s aggressive pricing changes that dynamic. Hsu stated that Apple’s entry into this market segment is forcing the industry to reassess its approach. “In the past, Apple’s pricing situation has always been high, so for them to release a particularly budget-friendly product, this is obviously a shock to the entire industry,” he said in comments translated from Chinese .

Industry-Wide Discussions

Hsu believes that major players in the PC ecosystem – including Microsoft, Intel, and AMD – are taking the MacBook Neo seriously and are actively discussing how to compete with it. Rumors about the MacBook Neo have circulated for over a year, but the actual price point came as a surprise.

Limitations and Use Cases

Despite the competitive threat, Hsu pointed out potential limitations of the MacBook Neo. He highlighted the 8GB of “unified memory” (RAM) which is not upgradeable, potentially restricting certain applications. He also characterized the MacBook Neo as primarily a “content consumption” device, similar to an iPad, rather than a full-fledged notebook capable of handling demanding tasks.

Market Impact and Response

Although the full impact of the MacBook Neo remains to be seen, Hsu suggested that it might not gain significant traction among existing Windows PC users due to software differences. However, he anticipates that the Windows PC ecosystem will respond with competing products.

Early Sales and Shipping

Preorders for the MacBook Neo began last week, with an initial launch date of March 11th. However, shipping times have already extended to a few weeks, indicating strong initial demand.
