MacKinnon's 4-Point Night Leads Avalanche to 6-3 Win Over Lightning

Colorado Avalanche Defeat Tampa Bay Lightning 6-3

Nathan MacKinnon recorded a goal and three assists to power the Colorado Avalanche to a 6-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night at Ball Arena, bouncing back from consecutive road losses. MacKinnon’s four-point performance led an offensive surge that handed the Lightning their first loss after a three-game winning streak, as reported by The Associated Press via TSN.

The Avalanche jumped out to a fast start, building a two-period cushion that held despite a third-period push from Tampa Bay. Devon Toews, Fedor Svechkov, Artturi Lehkonen, and Martin Necas also scored for Colorado, while Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 31 shots to secure the win. Jake Guentzel scored twice and Charle-Edouard D’Astous added a goal for the Lightning, who outshot the Avalanche 34-23.

MacKinnon and Lehkonen Lead Avalanche Offense

Colorado established control early when MacKinnon and Necas helped the Avalanche build a lead through the first twenty minutes. Svechkov extended that advantage just 24 seconds into the second period by knocking in his own rebound past Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. Lehkonen added a goal later in the frame off a feed from MacKinnon to make it 4-1. MacKinnon then sealed his productive night 4:18 into the third period, using his speed in the neutral zone to beat Vasilevskiy short-side with a wrist shot.

The four-point night marked MacKinnon’s 45th career three-assist game, tying Joe Sakic for third in Avalanche and Quebec Nordiques franchise history. Only Peter Stastny, with 47, and Peter Forsberg, with 46, have recorded more. Lehkonen extended his current point streak to six games, during which he has tallied six goals and three assists. Necas capped the scoring with an empty-net goal at 17:19 of the final period.

Lightning Offensive Push Falls Short

Tampa Bay attempted to mount a comeback in the second half of the game, fueled by Guentzel’s two tallies. Guentzel cut the deficit to 4-2 with 42.7 seconds remaining in the second period, finishing a backhand pass from Brayden Point right after a power play concluded. Colorado unsuccessfully challenged the sequence for a missed stoppage, allowing the goal to stand. D’Astous added another goal in the third period with a snap shot from the high slot that beat Blackwood’s blocker, but the early deficit proved too steep to overcome.

Lightning head coach Jon Cooper’s squad struggled on the power play throughout the evening, failing to capitalize on multiple opportunities. Forward Nikita Kucherov was held off the scoresheet, keeping him at 1,137 career points, tied with Steven Stamkos for the franchise scoring record. Vasilevskiy stopped 18 of 23 shots in the loss.

Logan O'Connor Returns as Veteran Coaches Lead Teams

Friday’s matchup marked the season debut for Colorado forward Logan O’Connor, who logged 14:47 of ice time and registered three shots on goal. O’Connor missed the start of the campaign while recovering from a lower-body injury and dealing with the recent passing of his father, Myles O’Connor, a former NHL defenseman who died at age 59.

The game also highlighted the two longest-tenured head coaches currently in the NHL. Cooper took charge of the Lightning in March 2013 and has won two Stanley Cups, while Jared Bednar was hired by Colorado in August 2016 and captured the 2022 Stanley Cup against Tampa Bay. Among the spectators at Ball Arena was Wyndham Clark, the 2026 U.S. Open champion, who brought his trophy to the game and drank from the Stanley Cup replica while receiving an ovation from the crowd.
