Spotify Engagement Disconnect Follows Macklemore Tour Drop

Macklemore gained over 2.8 million new followers on Instagram and more than one million on TikTok following his removal from Ed Sheeran’s tour, yet streaming numbers on Spotify showed a much smaller initial impact. Social Blade data indicates Macklemore’s Instagram account grew faster than any other in September. Concurrently, his catalog on Spotify demonstrated stable baseline popularity rather than an immediate, universal streaming surge across every major market.

Can't Hold Us Becomes Most Streamed Hip-Hop Track

Macklemore’s 2012 hit “Can’t Hold Us” maintained a spot in the global Spotify Top 200 since February, when a viral Instagram post drove renewed attention to the track. On August 19th, the song became the most-streamed hip-hop track in Spotify history.

When the tour split occurred on September 14th, daily global streams for the track rose from the 120th position to 51st within two days. The track reached its peak post-split volume on September 18th with over 1.8 million streams and charted in 30 countries.

Streaming spikes varied significantly by country rather than mirroring press coverage. In the United States, Spotify’s largest market, “Can’t Hold Us” peaked at number 95 on September 15th and fell off the charts entirely by October 1st. In contrast, Switzerland saw the track peak at number 4, though it had already maintained a top-20 position throughout the month.

Irish Musicians Quit Tour in Protest

Ireland proved to be an exception to standard chart patterns, as “Can’t Hold Us” jumped from number 154 to number 29 on the Irish Spotify charts. Sheeran’s touring band included the Irish folk group Beoga, who co-wrote the track “Galway Girl,” alongside other Irish acts Aaron Rowe and Finneas O’Connell.

Following the announcement that Macklemore was dropped from the tour, Beoga and Rowe both quit in protest, citing their Irish heritage. Taoiseach Micheál Martin delivered a speech supporting Palestinians at the United Nations the same week, highlighting cultural and political alignment between Ireland and Palestine.
