North American Theatrical Release Set for Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising

Aniplex of America and Fathom Entertainment will screen Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising in theaters across North America from January 16 to 19. The official sequel to the film Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion will be available with both Japanese audio and English subtitles, as well as an English dub. Tickets officially go on sale on December 11.

Film debuts at number one in Japan

The film opened in Japanese theaters on August 28, complete with IMAX screenings on opening day. It debuted at number one at the Japanese box office, selling 535,000 tickets and earning 939,647,100 yen (about US$5.95 million) in its first three days. The production features a returning staff from animation studio SHAFT, including original creators Magica Quartet, chief director Akiyuki Simbo, scriptwriter Gen Urobuchi, original character designer Ume Aoki, and composer Yuki Kajiura. FictionJunction performs the theme song Kanata.

AniSearch notes that the story follows Madoka living a carefree life while Homura Akemi dominates the newly formed reality of Mitakihara as an almost omnipotent existence. Homura protects her former companions in secret until three new magical girls unexpectedly arrive at the school. This sudden arrival disrupts the balance and threatens the foundational reality Homura created to protect Madoka.
