Madrid’s ‘On the Margins’ Festival Brings Free Theatre to Nine Neighborhoods This Spring
Madrid residents will have access to a diverse range of theatrical performances this spring as the inaugural ‘On the Margins: Neighborhood Theatre Festival’ takes center stage across nine districts. The festival, a project of the 21 DISTRICTS program, aims to bring performing arts to local communities with a free program open to all audiences from March 20-29, 2026.
A Collaborative Initiative
The ‘On the Margins’ festival is a result of collaboration between the 21 DISTRICTS program and the Madrid City Council’s participatory budgeting program. 21 DISTRICTS was established in October 2020 to enrich the cultural life of Madrid by supporting the artistic community, encouraging citizen participation and optimizing the utilize of municipal cultural spaces.
Festival Schedule and Performances
The festival will unfold across the districts of Moratalaz, Vicálvaro, Villa de Vallecas, Carabanchel, Puente de Vallecas, Usera, Latina, Villaverde, and Tetuán. Here’s a glimpse of the performances scheduled:
- March 20: My Previous Life, based on Teresa Donato’s book Missing Twice, will be performed at the El Torito Cultural Center (Moratalaz) for audiences over 18. Simultaneously, Mireia Miracle’s Gifta, a clown-based reflection on the world, will be presented at the Valdebernardo Cultural Center (Vicálvaro) and is suitable for families with children aged 3 and up.
- March 21: The Wonderful Lamp by Giradas Producciones, inspired by Valle Inclán’s function, will be staged at the Zazuar Cultural Center (Villa de Vallecas) for those aged 12 and above. At the Fernando Lázaro Carreter Cultural Center (Carabanchel), Luis Bermejo will perform Today I Have Something to Do, recommended for audiences 14 and older.
- March 22: Proyecto Cultura’s Literary Booths will offer a listening experience of poetry by Lorca, Gloria Fuertes, Antonio Machado, and Emily Dickinson at the Nueva Numancia Market (Puente de Vallecas) for ages 10 and up. The festival concludes with The Young Woman’s Rebellion on the Internet, a musical adaptation of Farm Animal (Orwell) set in 2035, at the Paco de Lucía Cultural Center (Latina) for audiences 14 and up.
Beyond the Weekend
The festival’s programming continues the following weekend with additional performances including Infinite Adolescence by Pont Flotant, a poetry recital by María Pastor, Carlos Wernicke, and David Merlín, Menina. I am a fucking work of Velázquez by Proyecto cultura, and Eight Poems, Eight Women featuring María Pastor and Iván Sangüesa.
