Magaluf Gang Rape: Eight Men Sentenced for Attack on British Teenager
Eight men – seven French nationals and one Swiss citizen – have been sentenced to a combined total of over 73 years in prison for the gang rape of a British teenager in Magaluf, Mallorca, in August 2023. The attack, which was recorded and shared on Snapchat, involved horrific acts of violence, and degradation.
Details of the Attack
The incident occurred at the BH Mallorca Resort on August 14, 2023. The victim, an 18-year-traditional British woman, was subjected to a 30-minute ordeal by the group, who yelled abusive comments and threats during the assault. According to court documents, the men laughed loudly and made degrading remarks, including the phrase “There’s four of us and there’s a cow.”
Five of the men sexually penetrated the victim, receiving sentences of either eleven or nine years in prison. Another man was sentenced to four years for sexual assault without penetration. All eight admitted to filming the attack, with two sharing footage on Snapchat.
Plea Deal and Sentencing
The men initially faced potential prison sentences exceeding 150 years. Yet, they reached a plea deal with prosecutors, accepting guilt in exchange for a reduced sentence. The agreement detailed how the men used their mobile phones to record videos focusing on the victim’s private parts, intending to humiliate and violate her. The recordings were shared on Snapchat while the victim was semi-conscious or unconscious.
Khalil Abderrahmen Mejbri and Romain Charles Michel Galatioto were convicted of oral penetration and sentenced to nine years each. Anthony Guy Gerard Wengler, Lucas Haiaiel Ngandjeu Djamen Tchatchou, and Galatioto received eleven-year sentences for sexual assault with carnal access. Satilmis Sahan was sentenced to four years for sexual assault without penetration.
All eight men received an additional two years and three months in prison for filming the assault.
Investigation and Evidence
The sickening footage recorded by the attackers proved crucial in their arrests and prosecution. One suspect filmed 14 videos totaling 170 seconds, while another filmed five videos lasting 142 seconds. The 14-page indictment detailed how six of the attackers initially went to a hotel room, later joined by two more, where the assault took place.
The charges included five counts of rape involving two or more men, sexual assault without penetration, and privacy violations related to the publication of the videos.
Current Status and Potential Deportation
Several of the men had already been granted bail prior to the trial, having served time on remand. Defense lawyers are seeking the deportation of the five men currently in prison, potentially after serving six or seven years. However, public prosecutors are expected to argue for the full sentences to be served.
