United States | Authorities detail operation of cross-border tunnel in case that led to conviction in Texas
United States federal authorities reported details about the use of a cross-border underground tunnel that connected Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, with El Paso, Texas, in the framework of a case previously investigated and that recently led to a judicial conviction.
According to the official report from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the infrastructure had been built by an international criminal organization and extended throughout the Rio Grande area. The tunnel had ventilation and electrical supply systems, which allowed its continuous use without being detected from the surface.
The authorities explained that, during their operation, the people transported through the tunnel emerged from a manhole cover in the United States, which was directly connected to a modified box truck with a hidden compartment, facilitating the transfer without visible exposure in the border area.
The investigation was developed by Homeland Security Investigations, in coordination with the Border Patrol. As a result of the operation carried out at the time, additional arrests were made and tools and materials used for the construction and maintenance of the underground infrastructure were seized.
In this context, authorities confirmed that a resident of the state of Texas was recently convicted for his participation in logistical operations linked to the use of this tunnel.
