Man in His 20s Suffers Head Injuries in Baseball Bat Attack at Monaghan Home
A man in his 20s sustained serious head injuries following a baseball bat attack inside his home in Monaghan, according to verified reports from Irish Independent and Northern Sound FM. The incident occurred on January 14, 2025, at a residence on Park Road, Mullaghmonaghan, Monaghan.
Gardaí confirmed that the victim was attacked by a gang using a baseball bat, resulting in significant trauma requiring hospitalization. He was subsequently placed in an induced coma at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
Court Proceedings and Charges
Three individuals — Jason Maughan (25), Stephen Maughan (23), and Molly Roberts (22) — were charged in connection with the assault. All three appeared before Monaghan District Court and later Cavan District Court on charges of assault causing harm.
During a contested bail hearing in January 2025, Detective Sergeant Ciara Hayes stated that CCTV footage from the scene would form part of the prosecution’s case, showing Jason Maughan striking the victim twice with blows to the head and elbow using a weapon.
The judge noted that after the attack, the accused returned to their vehicle while leaving the victim “helpless” on the ground. All three later returned to Mullaghmatt, where Molly Roberts, a childcare worker, made a 999 call to summon emergency medical assistance.
Stephen Maughan was denied bail and remanded in custody, while Molly Roberts was granted bail subject to strict conditions. Jason Maughan was also remanded pending further directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Investigation and Evidence
Gardaí conducted a follow-up search after the incident and recovered both a suspected steel baseball bat and a wooden bat believed to have been used in the attack. These items were submitted as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
The DPP has been granted multiple extensions to prepare its case, with the most recent adjournment occurring in May 2025 to allow additional time for case preparation.
Current Status
As of September 2025, the charges against the trio were upgraded ahead of their appearance at Monaghan District Court. The victim remains in recovery from his injuries, though no further updates on his condition have been publicly released.
The case continues to proceed through the Irish courts, with legal proceedings ongoing as the DPP prepares its final case file.
