Fatal Shooting in Downtown Asheville Leaves One Dead, Bystanders Injured

Asheville, NC – A shooting in downtown Asheville early Sunday morning, June 1, 2025, resulted in one death and injuries to several bystanders, according to Asheville Police Department (APD) reports. The incident occurred on Rankin Avenue near College Street around 12:07 a.m.

Details of the Shooting

Police identified the victim as 26-year-old Andy Garcia Porras, who was found dead in the road. Authorities were alerted to the scene by reports of gunfire. During the shooting, several uninvolved bystanders were struck by stray bullets. One victim was transported to Mission Hospital in stable condition, while others sustained minor grazing injuries and were treated at the scene. WLOS and Local3News confirmed these details.

Ongoing Investigation

Detectives have identified persons of interest and are actively following up on leads as the investigation continues. Asheville police noted this is the department’s second homicide investigation of the year. Local3News reported that a previous “accidental shooting” is also being investigated as a homicide.
