Manchester United Defeats Liverpool 1-0 in Women’s Super League
Manchester United secured a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Women’s Super League at Leigh, driven by an early sixth-minute goal from Julia Zigiotti Olme. The win marks United’s second league victory of the season under head coach Eva Olid, lifting the team to seven points in the table alongside their opponents. Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating attempted a pass out from the back, but Zigiotti intercepted the clearance just outside the penalty area. The Swedish midfielder collected the loose ball and executed a lofted chip over the retreating goalkeeper to score the game’s only goal.
Tactical Intensity and First-Half Chances
United maintained high pressure throughout the opening period, forcing errors from Gareth Taylor’s Liverpool side. Despite trailing, Liverpool pushed for an equalizer before halftime. Goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce preserved United’s lead midway through the first half by producing a sharp double save. She first stopped a low effort from Cornelia Kapocs and quickly rose to block Beata Olsson’s attempt on the rebound. United nearly doubled their lead five minutes before the break when Jess Park drove forward from her own half. Park fired a left-footed shot from inside the penalty area that crashed off the crossbar and bounced away to safety. Liverpool hit the woodwork shortly after when Beata Olsson directed a hooked effort from a free-kick onto the near post with the assistance of a touch from Tullis-Joyce.
Second-Half Defending and Standout Performances
The second half featured fewer clear-cut chances as United defended their slender lead. Liverpool’s best opportunity arrived twenty minutes from time when defender Jenna Clark found herself unmarked at a corner kick, but she directed her header wide of the back post.
At the other end, United substitutes and forwards continued to test Keating. Elisabeth Terland forced a late save with a curling effort, and Andrea Medina was denied in a one-on-one situation when Keating rushed off her line to smother the attempt near the end of the first half.
Resurgence Under Eva Olid
The result extends Manchester United’s unbeaten run to five matches across all competitions, reflecting a significant turnaround after a difficult start to Olid’s tenure. United opened the league season with two consecutive defeats, culminating in a 5-0 loss to Chelsea, but have since gathered seven points from their last three league outings. “We have just grown confidence in how we play,” Zigiotti said.
