With a goal in the first minute and the last minute of normal time, Phil Foden bailed Manchester City out.
This was a game that looked to be in the bag,but somehow almost ended with them in a mini-crisis after consecutive defeats to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen.
The England midfielder’s terrific guided finish in the 90th minute, after dancing past two tackles in the box, sent the etihad into raptures. It sent Pep Guardiola frantically running down the touch line to pass on instructions on how to see out the lead.
City had failed to do that in the second half, unable to react to the formation switch and direct approach of Leeds with two strikers. They lacked any control and could not sustain possession at all for the entire half until Foden’s moment of brilliance.
The team has been overly reliant on Haaland for goals, but Foden is now on six goals and three assists in all competitions.
This was the sort of match-winning moment he was producing two seasons ago when he was the football of the Year. This season, though, he is learning to pair that with the all-around game needed to play in the middle for a Guardiola team.
