The pursuit of Ederson appeared to be one of Manchester United’s primary summer objectives. As reported by The Athletic in June, the two clubs had reached a framework agreement for a deal valued at approximately €40.5 million, supplemented by €3.5 million in performance-related add-ons.
However, the situation shifted significantly as the club re-evaluated its recruitment priorities. According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United formally notified Atalanta on July 10, 2026, that they would not be proceeding with the finalization of the contract. This sudden pivot marks a departure from earlier expectations that the midfielder, who has earned five caps for the Brazilian national team, would bolster the United engine room under the current management.
Pivot Toward Andrey Santos
The decision to abandon the Ederson pursuit coincides with Manchester United’s broader strategy for the summer window. The club is currently prioritizing other targets, most notably the acquisition of Andrey Santos.
Reports indicate that United is nearing a deal for the Chelsea midfielder, with the transfer fee expected to reach approximately €60 million.
Atalanta Retains Tactical Core
While the Premier League transition has been halted, Ederson remains under contract with the Italian side.
