Paris Police Order Soccer Match Postponed
Paris Saint-Germain’s home Ligue 1 fixture against Lyon has been pushed back 24 hours to Monday, October 26, at 8:30 p.m. local time, after the Paris Police Prefecture issued a decree prohibiting the match from taking place on its original Sunday date. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) announced the schedule change in a Friday statement, noting that the adjustment was made in agreement with Ligue 1+ due to security concerns across the French capital.
French authorities are deploying approximately 70,000 security personnel nationwide as the city braces for another weekend of widespread demonstrations, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. Last weekend saw around 550,000 participants protest rising fuel prices, education standards, and the cost of living, with some demonstrations in Paris marred by violence, looting, and destruction.
Security Strains Overlap With NFL Debut
The security challenge in Paris is further complicated by the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints NFL regular-season game scheduled for Sunday afternoon at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, located about 10 kilometers north of the Place de la Bastille. While the Paris Police Prefecture prohibited the PSG-Lyon soccer match to free up security resources, the NFL game is set to go ahead as planned at 3:30 p.m. CET, with the league stating it has significantly increased security measures.
The exact reason why local soccer authorities were forced to reschedule while the visiting NFL game proceeded remains unknown, though logistics favor moving a match between local teams rather than altering an overseas league’s debut. The unfolding security measures have also forced closures at major cultural sites, including the Louvre and the Art Basel Paris fair, which shut its doors two days early.
Logistical Conflict With Ballon d’Or Ceremony
The 24-hour postponement creates an unexpected clash for Paris Saint-Germain players nominated for the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, which takes place on the exact same Monday evening. Ten PSG players feature among the 30 nominees for the prestigious individual award, including last year’s winner Ousmane Dembélé, alongside Warren Zaïre-Emery for the Kopa Trophy, Matvey Safonov for the Yashin Trophy, Luis Enrique for Men’s Coach of the Year, and the club itself for Men’s Club of the Year.
Injured players such as Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Marquinhos, and Nuno Mendes have already been ruled out of the Lyon fixture, potentially freeing them to attend the London gala. However, fully fit squad members face a direct choice between fulfilling top-of-the-table Ligue 1 commitments against Lyon—who currently lead the table with 14 points ahead of second-place PSG on goal difference—and traveling to the awards ceremony.
