Manchester United Squad Faces Severe Injury Crisis Ahead of Tottenham Clash
Manchester United is dealing with a mounting injury crisis across its squad following the recent international break, leaving manager Michael Carrick to evaluate a depleted roster ahead of the October 10, 2023, Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur. Three players were forced to withdraw from their national teams due to physical issues, while ongoing fitness concerns threaten key starters across multiple positions.
The physical toll of the international fixtures hit the Red Devils hard in defense and midfield. Defender Patrick Dorgu returned to Manchester United after sustaining an injury during Denmark’s 2-0 victory over Wales on September 27. The left-back subsequently missed the return fixture between the two sides and Denmark’s 4-2 defeat against Portugal on October 2. Noussair Mazraoui faced a similar setback when the Moroccan defender had to leave the pitch during a Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho, subsequently missing a 1-1 draw against Mali on October 5.
Midfield options have also narrowed significantly. Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford were excluded from the England squad entirely due to ongoing fitness issues. Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes experienced physical discomfort while with Portugal; though he missed a 2-1 away victory against Norway, he subsequently managed to return to the starting lineup for subsequent matches against Denmark, Norway, and Wales.
Benjamin Sesko and Amad Diallo Race Against Time
Forward Benjamin Sesko has been excluded from the Slovenian national team for the fourth time and faces a major battle to prove his fitness. The 23-year-old striker has not started a Premier League match since May 3 and has not completed a full 90-minute appearance since April.
Winger Amad Diallo is also racing against the clock to feature. The Ivory Coast international has remained sidelined since suffering an injury just prior to the start of the season against Hull City, though club staff hope he can recover sufficiently to occupy a spot on the bench against Tottenham.
Injuries Leave Carrick with Limited Goalkeeper Options
The squad’s depth issues extend directly to the goalkeeping department. Karl Darlow withdrew from the Wales national squad due to fitness concerns, while veteran Tom Heaton faces an estimated two-month layoff with a hamstring injury. With both players unavailable, young goalkeeper Dermot Mee is expected to serve as the backup option on the bench.
Carrick faces late fitness tests on multiple squad members to finalize his starting XI for the sixth-round league encounter on October 10.
