NEW YORK (January 26, 2026) – Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander has been fined $5,000 by the NHL for an inappropriate gesture made during a game on January 18th, the league announced Monday.
The NHL Department of Player safety resolute that Nylander’s actions violated league policy regarding inappropriate conduct, specifically prohibiting offensive remarks, obscene language, and abusive gestures. The incident occurred while Nylander was in the press box and was captured on camera during a live broadcast.
According to George Parros, Senior Vice President of Player Safety, the gesture was deemed unacceptable and serves as a reminder that the NHL’s code of conduct extends beyond active gameplay to encompass player behavior throughout the arena and in public settings.
The $5,000 fine will be donated to the players’ Emergency Fund, a resource providing financial assistance to current and former NHL players and their families facing financial hardship.
