Maryland Women’s Tennis Defeats Wisconsin in Thrilling 4-3 Victory

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The University of Maryland Women’s Tennis Team secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the #22-ranked Wisconsin Badgers in a Big Ten Conference match on Saturday, March 21, 2026. This marks the Terps’ second home conference win of the season and their first triumph over a top-25 opponent since 2013, when they defeated #11-ranked Duke.

Doubles Competition

Wisconsin initially gained the upper hand in doubles play, winning two of the three matches. Ellison Reynoldson and Ekaterina Ivanova of Wisconsin defeated Ema Kovacevic and Emma Ghirardato of Maryland 6-4. Maria Sholokhova and Kaede Usui also secured a win for the Badgers, besting Diya Challa and Oliwia Orlinska 7-6 (7-4). However, Maryland’s Tamari Gagoshidze and Magdalena Baniak responded with a 7-6 (7-4) victory over Tianna Rangan and Kaja Jacobson, preventing a complete sweep.

Singles Competition – A Terp Comeback

The momentum shifted in singles play, with Maryland demonstrating resilience and determination. Emma Ghirardato and Diya Challa quickly place the Terps ahead, securing wins in straight sets. Ghirardato defeated Ekaterina Ivanova 6-4, 6-2, while Challa triumphed over Ellison Reynoldson 6-2, 6-1.

Wisconsin fought back, with Maria Sholokhova defeating Oliwia Orlinska 6-1, 7-5, and Kaede Usui overcoming Lucia Donnelly 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. Magdalena Baniak added another point for Maryland, winning her match against Tianna Rangan 6-4, 6-3.

With the score tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to Ema Kovacevic’s match against Kaja Jacobson. Kovacevic battled through a challenging three-set encounter, ultimately prevailing 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, sealing the victory for the Terps.
