The impromptu clash between the 16-year NHL veteran and the Calder-winning defenseman unfolded on August 21, 2026, marking a playful capstone to the annual youth training camp, according to reporting by Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News. Martin, known for his physical style over a 987-game career that included 164 fights across 16 seasons, traded friendly blows with his young housemate. According to Rosner’s reporting, Martin’s first career NHL fight occurred on February 10, 2010, against Pittsburgh Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy, while his final official NHL bout came against Ottawa Senators forward Zack MacEwen on January 14, 2025.

Footage shared on social media by Rosner and Jonny Lazarus captured the lighthearted exchange. While the New York Islanders organization would ideally prefer that Schaefer avoids fighting entirely during his professional career, the young defender was willing to entertain the crowd, later even dropping the gloves with a camp attendee, as noted by Lazarus.

Community Impact and Camp Mission

Beyond the entertainment value of the player-prospect bout, the training camp focuses heavily on community engagement and youth hockey development on Long Island. Reflecting on the event, Schaefer emphasized the broader purpose of the gathering.

“Doing this for Marty is awesome, but doing this for Long Island is the best too,” Schaefer stated, as reported by Stefen Rosner.

The annual event continues to draw community interest by connecting young players with current and former NHL personnel, fostering local participation in hockey through approachable, fan-friendly interactions.
