Widow’s Bay won every category it was nominated for during the final night of the ceremony. The victories included Outstanding Comedy Series, a Lead Actor win for Matthew Rhys, a Supporting Actress win for Kate O’Flynn, and a Supporting Actor win for Stephen Root. Katie Dippold won for writing, and Hiro Murai won for directing. Murai’s win made him the first Asian filmmaker to win Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Stephen Root secured his first Emmy and became the oldest winner in the history of the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category, while O’Flynn also claimed her first Emmy nomination win for playing Patricia.
Matthew Rhys Makes Emmy History With Dual Lead Wins
Matthew Rhys achieved a first-of-its-kind Emmy milestone by winning two lead acting awards during the same ceremony. Before taking the comedy prize for Widow’s Bay, Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance in Netflix’s The Beast in Me, where he starred opposite Claire Danes. Combined with his 2018 Lead Actor in a Drama Series victory for The Americans, Rhys is now the first male performer to win lead acting Emmys across drama, comedy, and limited-series categories.
The Pitt and Rhea Seehorn Secure Major Drama Wins
In the drama categories, HBO Max’s The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series for the second consecutive year. The medical drama became the first series since Mad Men to take the category for each of its first two seasons. Noah Wyle repeated his Lead Actor victory for playing Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, stating during his acceptance speech, “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and this is the only club I’ve ever wanted to join. Thank you for accepting me.”
Rhea Seehorn won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus, marking her first Primetime Emmy win. Vince Gilligan subsequently won Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for Pluribus, which marked his first individual writing Emmy despite his previous wins as a producer on Breaking Bad.
