Overcoming a Two-Year Injury Layoff
Mayank Yadav burst onto the scene in 2024 with raw pace, but subsequent injuries sidelined him for extended periods. Reflecting on his recovery in Harare, Mayank noted that his age made the lengthy absence particularly challenging. “It was very difficult, especially the gap of two years was a challenge because age wasn’t on my side,” Mayank stated. “I was just 22-23. I felt that I had to suffer so much at a young age. At the same time, the motivation to play for the country was always there.”
Working alongside a youthful bowling unit in Zimbabwe, Mayank shared tactical insights based on his opening spell. Describing the team dynamic, he explained that the group focused on maintaining pressure after the powerplay rather than purely discussing velocity. “We don’t talk a lot about pace but we have a nice bond,” Mayank said. “I bowled the first over today, so I shared inputs with Prince and Ashok — about the assistance I got and the better options to attack.”
Shreyas Iyer Leads India to Victory
India restricted Zimbabwe to 125 for 7 and chased down the target with seven wickets in hand, securing a comfortable win. The result marked India’s first victory since winning the T20 World Cup earlier in the year, and Shreyas Iyer’s first win as India’s T20I captain following seven previous winless matches.
Mayank expressed high praise for playing under Iyer’s leadership for the first time. “I hadn’t spoken to him much before the game,” Mayank said. “During the game, he showed a lot of confidence in the bowlers. I felt good that he backed what I wanted to bowl.”
Mayank also lauded Iyer’s batting performance during the fixture. “His batting is unbelievable,” Mayank added. “When we played against them [RR], and he smashed us.”
