McLaren Suffers Double Retirement at Chinese Grand Prix

Shanghai, China – The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix saw a disastrous start for McLaren, with both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri failing to make it to the race start due to separate electrical faults. The double retirement marks a tricky weekend for the team, especially following Piastri’s crash during the Australian Grand Prix the previous week.

Electrical Issues Plague McLaren

Norris’s issue was detected before he could even reach the grid, stemming from an electronics problem within his car. Piastri managed to reach his grid slot, but a similar issue arose shortly before the formation lap, forcing his car to be wheeled back to the garage. McLaren confirmed that both cars experienced distinct power unit-related electrical faults.

Piastri Reflects on Consecutive Non-Starts

This marks the second consecutive race where Piastri has been unable to participate, following his crash during qualifying for his home race in Melbourne. “It’s been a while since I’ve watched two Grand Prix’s on TV,” Piastri said. “Obviously, this one is a bit different, last week was just pretty rough to take this one, unfortunately these kinds of things happen in racing at times and especially at the beginning of a new regulation, it’s probably not a huge surprise, so just a shame that it’s happened to both cars etc.”

Norris Disappointed by Pre-Race Problem

Norris expressed his frustration at discovering the issue so close to the race start. “I don’t know how long it’s been going on for honestly, sometimes it’s better to abandon them to crack on with things, but I found out probably 20 minutes before I was meant to go out the garage,” Norris explained. “I think they’ve been working at things for a little while already…. Some electrical issue with the power unit, and therefore can’t even start it, so yeah, a shame, my first non-start in F1, which is sad, but yeah, and even worse, that’s a double [Did] Not Start with Oscar as well, so yeah, not the best day for us.” He added, “I’m just disappointed, that’s all. I’m disappointed I didn’t secure to go and do my job today. I’m frustrated for the whole team, it’s not just me, I love the mechanics, everyone puts a lot of perform into things, and it’s just a complicated bit of it.”

Historical Precedent for McLaren

This is the first time in McLaren’s history that two cars have failed to start a Grand Prix due to reliability issues. However, team founder Bruce McLaren experienced two consecutive Did Not Starts (DNS) in 1969 at the Mexican and US Grand Prix.

Race Result: Antonelli Secures Victory

Despite McLaren’s setbacks, the race went ahead with Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes taking the win, securing a 1-2 finish for the team. Lewis Hamilton achieved his first podium of the season, finishing third for Ferrari.

Additional Retirements

The Chinese Grand Prix also saw Gabriel Bortoleto of Audi and Alex Albon of Williams fail to start the race due to mechanical problems.
