Meath Mum Sharon Ball Prepares to Fly Home After Fresh York Surgery

Sharon Ball, a 38-year-old primary school teacher from Bohermeen near Kells in County Meath, has received medical clearance to fly home to Ireland following life-saving brain surgery in New York. The mother of three shared an emotional update on social media, expressing profound gratitude for the overwhelming support that made her treatment possible.

Diagnosed in October 2025 with Stage 4 skull-based osteosarcoma – an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer – Sharon underwent several rounds of chemotherapy that were ultimately unsuccessful. Her medical team in New York determined she was a candidate for complex surgery, prompting a nationwide fundraising effort to cover the substantial medical and transport costs.

The GoFundMe campaign, launched with a target of €650,000, resonated deeply across Ireland, and beyond. Supporters including celebrities such as Maura Higgins, Kayleigh Trappe, and Martin King helped drive donations past €850,000, significantly exceeding the original goal. This outpouring of generosity enabled Sharon to access the specialized care she needed.

Following the procedure last week, surgeons successfully removed 97% of the tumour. Sharon described feeling the impact of global prayers and well-wishes daily, stating they played a vital role in her recovery. “I can feel the prayers every day helping me to recover and heal,” she shared online.

Now cleared for air travel, Sharon is preparing to return home later this week to reunite with her children – Jack (6), Louis (4), and Sophie (9 months). While she awaits confirmation of the next treatment phase, which is expected to include proton radiation and further chemotherapy, she remains focused on the present moment.

“I am just lost for words with the continuous support at home. I have been watching and hearing all about the fundraisers,” Sharon said. “I owe this second chance at life to you all. I get to come home to hug and kiss my beautiful resilient children again. You have given me hope, always remember nothing is impossible.”

Her journey continues to inspire communities across Ireland, highlighting both the challenges of rare cancer diagnoses and the extraordinary power of collective solidarity in times of medical crisis.
