Medvedev and Cerundolo Advance at Miami Open, Alcaraz and Auger-Aliassime Eliminated
The Miami Masters 1000 has seen a series of upsets, with former champion Carlos Alcaraz already out of the tournament. Adding to the surprises, Daniil Medvedev, a finalist at Indian Wells just a week prior, suffered a narrow defeat against Francisco Cerundolo, who secured a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 victory to reach the round of 16.
Cerundolo’s Resurgence and Path to the Round of 16
Cerundolo demonstrated strong form from the outset, winning nine of the first ten games. While Medvedev mounted a comeback, regaining momentum and taking the lead in the third set, Cerundolo ultimately prevailed. At 3-4 in the third set, Cerundolo saved four break points, and despite a chance for Medvedev to serve for the match at 4-all, he was unable to capitalize. The decisive tie-break favored Cerundolo, securing his place in the next round.
Cerundolo is building on previous success at the Miami Open, having reached the semi-finals in 2022 and the quarterfinals in both 2023 and 2025. He will now face Ugo Humbert in the round of 16.
Further Upsets: Auger-Aliassime Eliminated
Another seeded player, Felix Auger-Aliassime (seeded number 7), was eliminated from the tournament, losing to Terence Atmane 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Ugo Humbert also advanced, defeating Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 7-6.
Medvedev’s Performance and Recent Form
Daniil Medvedev, ranked 10th, had a strong start to 2026, with a 19-5 win/loss record, including 18 wins on hard courts. He recently won titles in Brisbane, defeating Brandon Nakashima in the final 6-2, 7-6(1), and in Dubai, where he defeated Tallon Griekspoor without a completed match. He had won 18 consecutive sets prior to the match against Cerundolo, dating back to his Dubai title run ATP Tour.
Last year in Miami, Medvedev lost to Jaume Antoni Munar Clar in the second round 6-2, 6-3.
