Merz Outlines Social Reform Timeline, Seeks SPD Agreement
STUTTGART (dpa-AFX) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a timeline for presenting planned social reforms concerning pensions, health insurance and care to the public by the end of December 2026. During the CDU party conference, a proposal from the Junge Union (JU), the party’s youth wing, to commit the CDU to a 20-point reform plan for pensions and health insurance was unsuccessful. Delegates instead referred the demands to the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag for further discussion. Leading CDU representatives cautioned that a firm commitment to drastic social sector measures could negatively impact upcoming state election campaigns according to Deutsche Welle.
Merz Vows to Counter Far-Right Influence
