Meta Introduces Stricter Content Controls for Teen Accounts on Instagram in Vietnam
In a bid to enhance online safety for younger users, Meta has rolled out updated content restrictions for teen accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger in Vietnam. The changes, announced in late May 2023, aim to align the platform’s policies with age-appropriate standards while addressing parental concerns about exposure to harmful content.
13+ Content Classification and Parental Controls
The new measures are based on the 13+ film rating system, a framework familiar to parents, to filter content unsuitable for teenagers. Meta has integrated this classification into its content moderation tools, ensuring that users under 18 encounter fewer explicit or risky materials. For instance, posts containing hate speech, dangerous challenges, or content promoting substance use—such as depictions of marijuana—will be automatically hidden or not recommended.
Parents now have greater control over their children’s online experiences. Teen accounts can only adjust settings with parental approval, and Meta has introduced a “Content Restrictions” feature, set to launch later in 2023, which will further limit access to sensitive topics like self-harm, violence, and alcohol-related content.
Enhanced AI and Proactive Moderation
Meta has upgraded its AI systems to detect and block non-compliant content in real time. The technology, now deployed across Instagram, identifies and restricts accounts that violate the updated guidelines. Teen users cannot follow, interact with, or view content from flagged accounts, even if those accounts are shared by others they follow.
search terms related to harmful topics—such as “alcohol” or “violence”—are blocked, even if entered with typos. Content flagged as inappropriate will not appear in the “Explore” section, Reels, News Feed, or Stories, regardless of how it is shared.
Collaboration with Vietnamese Partners
Meta is partnering with local organizations in Vietnam to promote digital literacy and safe online practices. The company will participate in the 2026 Children’s Action Month, hosting an interactive booth at an event in Hanoi to educate parents on setting up and managing teen accounts. These efforts are part of Meta’s broader initiative to foster responsible digital behavior among youth.

Parental Empowerment and Challenges
While the updates aim to create a safer environment, some parents argue that the 13+ classification may not fully align with their personal values. Meta acknowledges this and emphasizes that the “Content Restrictions” feature will allow families to tailor settings according to their preferences.
However, critics note that automated systems can sometimes misclassify content, potentially limiting access to educational or age-appropriate material. Meta has stated it will continue refining its algorithms to balance safety with user experience.
Looking Ahead
Meta’s latest updates reflect its ongoing commitment to addressing the unique challenges of social media for teenagers. As the platform expands its safety tools, the focus remains on empowering parents while fostering a digital space that encourages learning and connection without compromising well-being.
