Sony’s plan to phase out physical game discs for PlayStation consoles by January 2028 has triggered a formal regulatory challenge in Mexico, where lawmakers filed an antitrust complaint with the federal competition commission. According to filings promoted by Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio and Federal Deputy Iraís Reyes, the impending hardware shift threatens consumer ownership rights and market competition by concentrating game distribution entirely within the PlayStation Store.
Antitrust Complaint Targets PlayStation Store Control
The legal action represents one of the first formal regulatory challenges against the video game industry’s accelerating transition toward all-digital ecosystems. According to statements published by Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio, the corporate strategy fundamentally alters consumer property rights. “What you buy digitally isn’t yours—it’s a license they can take away,” Colosio stated on social media regarding the implications for players purchasing games solely through digital storefronts.
Federal Deputy Iraís Reyes argued that eliminating physical discs leaves owners of PlayStation hardware “forced to buy games exclusively in Sony’s store.” According to the lawmakers, this restriction eliminates traditional retail competition from brick-and-mortar merchants such as Liverpool, Sanborns, and GamePlanet, ultimately narrowing choices for Mexican consumers.
Sony Confirms End of Physical Discs for 2028
The regulatory dispute follows an official announcement issued via the PlayStation Blog on July 1, confirming that Sony will stop manufacturing physical discs for all new PlayStation software releases beginning in January 2028. From that date forward, new titles will debut exclusively through the PlayStation Store and authorized digital content distributors. According to reporting by CNBC, the corporate decision aligns with the steady, long-term growth of digital video game consumption across global markets.
The upcoming transition marks a major operational shift for the hardware manufacturer, which spent decades distributing flagship titles through dual physical and digital pipelines.
Corporate Defense and Digital Strategy
During a recent financial results presentation, Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao defended the digital-first business model, asserting that physical media never served as PlayStation’s primary competitive advantage against personal computer hardware.
“Our strength is curated content, that is one of our strengths. That the gaming environment is stable, that is another. Compared to high-end gaming PCs, our product is more affordable,” Lin Tao stated during the briefing.
Furthermore, the chief financial officer maintained that PlayStation can coexist peacefully with PC gaming platforms in coming years, as each ecosystem targets distinct segments of the consumer base with differing value propositions.
