Michail Antonio Navigates Football and Conflict in Qatar

Former West Ham United striker Michail Antonio is experiencing a unique and challenging start to his career in Qatar, as he balances a return to professional football with the backdrop of escalating military action in the Middle East. The 34-year-old joined Al Sailiya this month, continuing his comeback after a life-threatening car crash in December 2024.

A Debut Amidst Conflict

Antonio’s first experience with his fresh club was marked by the realities of the regional conflict. He reported hearing bombs and feeling the hotel shake on the day he was scheduled to make his debut. “The day I was meant to make my debut, that was a frightening day, hearing bombs and the hotel was shaking, that was terrifying,” Antonio told talkSPORT. “I looked out the window and saw flames from the bombs flying, that was the only day that was scary for me.”

Despite the unsettling experience, Antonio maintains he feels safe in Qatar. “Since I’ve been here, you do hear loud bangs and stuff, but you never really acquire to see anything,” he explained. “So, I’ve not had the experience of anything crazy going on here, so that’s the reason I do experience quite safe here…it reassures me that I’m okay here and I’m safe here.”

A Disappointing West Ham Exit

Antonio’s move to Qatar followed a decade with West Ham United, where he became the club’s all-time leading Premier League scorer with 68 goals. However, he expressed disappointment with how his time at the London Stadium ended.

“I was very disappointed,” Antonio admitted. “To be honest, I felt like, being at the club for ten years, being one of their main players for ten years, playing up until the day I crashed the car, I started most games until that day, I would have thought they’d have given me an opportunity to try and prove myself after and offer me a contract.”

After leaving West Ham, Antonio trained with Leicester City and Brentford in an attempt to secure another deal in English football, but ultimately found a new opportunity in Qatar.

Comeback After a Near-Fatal Crash

Antonio’s journey to Qatar is particularly remarkable given his recovery from a serious car accident in December 2024. The move represents a significant step in his return to professional football after the life-threatening incident.

His debut with Al Sailiya resulted in a 4-0 defeat to Al Duhail, but Antonio remains focused on rebuilding his career.
