Perry Fewell Takes Senior Vice President Role in NFL Officiating Department
Perry Fewell has joined the NFL Football Operations department as the SVP of Officiating Communications and Administration. Fewell steps into a role where he manages the daily functions of the officiating department, handles outreach with general managers and head coaches, and ensures compliance with the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association.
Extensive Coaching Background Precedes Front Office Appointment
Fewell brings 35 years of coaching experience to his new administrative post, including 22 in the NFL. His professional coaching resume features stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars during two separate periods, the St. Louis Rams, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, Washington Football Team, and Carolina Panthers. As the defensive coordinator for the Giants, Fewell oversaw the defensive unit during the team’s 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.
Before breaking into the professional ranks, Fewell spent 13 years coaching at the college level. His college coaching stops included Vanderbilt University, two separate stints at Army, Kent State and the University of North Carolina.
Playing Career and Athletic Honors
Fewell’s background in the sport extends back to his own playing days as a defensive back. He lettered at Lenoir-Rhyne University (N.C.) from 1980 to 1983, earning an induction into the school’s hall of fame in 2011.
His athletic achievements trace back to his high school years at South Point High School in Belmont, N.C., where he lettered in both football and track. That local impact led to an induction into the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame in 2001, followed by an induction into the Gaston County (N.C.) Hall of Fame in June 2012.
Department Operations and League Liaison Duties
In addition to managing internal officiating administration and union compliance, Fewell serves as a liaison to the NCAA on officiating-related matters.
