Synagogue Shooting in West Bloomfield, Michigan: Suspect Dead, Security Guard Injured
A suspect is dead after ramming a vehicle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and exchanging gunfire with synagogue security on Thursday afternoon. One security guard was injured during the incident.
Details of the Attack
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the suspect drove a truck through the doors of the synagogue and approximately 40 feet down a hallway CBS News. Synagogue security personnel engaged the suspect, resulting in a shooting. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
One member of the security team was struck by the vehicle and knocked unconscious. Bouchard stated the guard was pulled from the area by his team and transported to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover CBS News.
No Injuries to Students or Staff
Authorities confirmed that no students or staff were injured during the attack. All 140 students in the Susan and Harold Loss Early Childhood Center and the synagogue staff were accounted for and safe WXYZ. Teachers followed their training to preserve children calm during the incident.
Investigation and Potential Explosives
Investigators are currently clearing the suspect’s vehicle as a precaution, after something inside ignited CBS News.
