The Dissipated Eight: Middlebury College’s A Cappella Stalwarts Continue a Beloved Tradition

The Dissipated Eight (D8), Middlebury College’s oldest a cappella group, continues a twelve-year tradition of performing at Brandon Town Hall, captivating audiences with their blend of musical talent and comedic flair. Their most recent performance, on February 28th, 2026, showcased both vocal prowess and a newly debuted stand-up comedy routine.

A History of Harmony and Humor

Founded in 1952, D8 began as a barbershop octet with only seven members. The Dissipated Eight has evolved over the past seventy years, expanding its repertoire and performing throughout New England and beyond. The group periodically records their music, releasing their most recent Extended Play (EP), “Careful Now,” in September 2024. Currently, D8 boasts fifteen active members, auditioning each semester to maintain its vibrant sound.

The Brandon Town Hall Connection

The longstanding relationship between D8 and Brandon Town Hall began through the efforts of Dennis Marden, former president of the Friends of the Brandon Town Hall (FoBTH). After attending a D8 performance on the recommendation of a local parent, Marden invited the group to perform at the historic venue twelve years ago, a tradition that continues today. The Middlebury Campus reports that Marden played a crucial role in the rescue and renovation of the Town Hall, which had been vacant for thirty years before being revitalized by community support.

A Community Hub and Diverse Programming

Bill Moore, the current Recreation Director, Deputy Town Manager, and Economic Fulfillment Officer of Brandon, now oversees the Town Hall. Moore emphasized the commitment to diverse programming, building upon the foundation laid by the Friends of the Town Hall. The Rutland Herald notes that upcoming events include an aikido demonstration and the local singing competition, Brandon Idol.

The February 28th Performance

The February 28th, 2026 performance featured a sixteen-song set, followed by an encore. The setlist included a mix of classic songs, selections from movie soundtracks, and the group’s original composition, “Oxygen.” Audience members particularly enjoyed solos, such as Xander Bowles’ rendition of “Boondocks” by Little Big Town. D8 also incorporated their signature comedic element, with members offering humorous and often fictitious self-introductions. A tradition of serenading a randomly selected audience member was also part of the show.

Looking Ahead

D8 is scheduled to return to Brandon Town Hall on April 10th, 2026, for a performance alongside other Middlebury College a cappella groups. The group continues to balance its commitment to musical excellence with community engagement, performing not only at venues like Brandon Town Hall but also at high schools and retirement centers. More information about The Dissipated Eight, including performance schedules and recordings, can be found on their website.
