Milan Opens “Pio La Torre” House: A Haven for Vulnerable Individuals and a Symbol of the State’s Fight Against Organized Crime
Milan, Italy – A former property confiscated from organized crime has been transformed into “Casa Pio La Torre,” a new facility offering housing and support services for individuals experiencing vulnerability and homelessness in Trezzano sul Naviglio. The inauguration, held on February 12th, marks a significant step in the city’s commitment to social justice and combating the influence of the mafia.
From Confiscated Asset to Community Resource
The project, spearheaded by the Municipality of Trezzano sul Naviglio and the association “Una Casa Anche per Te” (A Home Also For You), repurposes a building previously seized from criminal organizations. The initiative aims to provide not only shelter but also a pathway towards regaining autonomy for those facing precarious living situations. The building now features a shower service for individuals experiencing homelessness and a space for haircuts, offering basic necessities and dignity.
A Response to Urgent Needs
Casa Pio La Torre offers six beds and is designed to be a transitional space, not an emergency shelter. It caters to individuals who, while in need, still possess a degree of self-sufficiency. According to Giovanni Balestrieri of Caritas, the house serves as “not only the response to a need, but also a form of stimulus and denunciation” regarding the broader housing crisis and the challenges faced by those without stable residence.
Who Will Benefit?
The facility will support a diverse range of individuals, including pensioners in difficult circumstances, fathers who have regained employment and are working to reunite with their families, and young people grappling with addiction or health issues. The program aims to help residents reintegrate into the workforce and rebuild their lives.

The project operates in close collaboration with local municipal social services, ensuring comprehensive support for residents. Guests are actively involved in the process, contributing a compact amount towards living expenses and participating in regular reviews of their individual plans. The reception process includes a visit to the house, allowing potential residents to decide if it’s the right fit for them.
Honoring a Legacy of Courage
The facility is named in memory of Renato Gelli, a deacon who dedicated his life to serving marginalized communities and passed away in late 2023. Local administrators emphasized that naming the space after Gelli is a commitment to continuing his work of care, listening, and attention to the most vulnerable.

The inauguration of Casa Pio La Torre, as highlighted by the Municipality of Trezzano sul Naviglio, represents a “tangible sign of the State’s action against the mafias.” It embodies a commitment to reclaiming assets from organized crime and repurposing them for the benefit of the community.
