South Korea’s Oceans Ministry Partners with YouTube Creators for Policy Promotion
The South Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has selected four YouTube teams – Uneul Science, Review Owl, Nowadays Haenyeo, and Sally – to co-produce videos promoting marine and fisheries policies in 2026. This initiative builds upon a successful program launched in 2024, expanding to include both established and emerging creators.
Expanding Digital Outreach
The Ministry announced the selection of these collaborative producers through its official YouTube channel on March 8, 2026. The recruitment process, which ran from February 5th to February 19th, attracted 27 applications, including teams with substantial subscriber bases, such as Review Owl (1.81 million subscribers) and Noll Science (1.37 million subscribers) (Yonhap News Agency).
New ‘Sprout’ Producer System
To enhance public engagement, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has been collaborating with video creators since 2024, producing over 60 video contents. This year, the Ministry introduced a “Sprout Collaborative Producer System,” targeting channels with between 10,000 and 100,000 subscribers alongside existing collaborators with over 100,000 subscribers. This expansion aims to broaden the reach of policy promotion through a more diverse range of channels (Yonhap News Agency).
Creator Lineup and Content Focus
Uneul Science and Review Owl, known for their science and lifestyle content respectively, bring significant reach to the partnership. Nowadays Haenyeo and Sally were selected as the “Sprout” cooperative producers. These four teams will create accessible video content explaining the Ministry’s policies, incorporating each creator’s unique style and posting regularly on their respective channels (Yonhap News Agency).
Ministry’s Vision
“We would like to thank everyone who participated in the recruitment of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ official YouTube cooperative creators in 2026,” said Jeong Do-hyun, spokesperson for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. “We will work with the selected producers to create content promoting maritime and fisheries policies that are easy for the public to understand and want to learn more about.” (Yonhap News Agency)
Recent Ministerial Appointment
This initiative follows the recent nomination of Hwang Jong-woo as Oceans Minister, who vowed to develop Busan into a global maritime hub, particularly for Arctic shipping routes (Yonhap News Agency). He assumed the role following the resignation of former Minister Chun Jae-soo, who stepped down amid allegations of accepting bribes from the Unification Church (Yonhap News Agency).
