Marvonte Coleman Charged With First-Degree Murder in East St. Louis Shooting

Marvonte Coleman, a 21-year-old resident of Spanish Lake, Missouri, faces a first-degree murder charge following the fatal shooting of Cobey L. Howard, according to reports. The Class M felony charge stems from an October 9, 2026, incident in the 1200 block of McCasland Avenue, where investigators found 28-year-old Howard shot multiple times inside a vehicle.

Investigation and Arrest Timeline

The East St. Louis Police Department requested assistance from the Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 Public Safety Enforcement Group (PSEG) on October 9, 2026. Emergency responders transported Howard to an area hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him deceased. ISP special agents led an extensive investigation that identified Coleman as the primary suspect in the homicide.

On October 12, 2026, the St. Louis Police Department (STLPD) located and took Coleman into custody in St. Louis. State police investigators subsequently presented the accumulated case file to St. Clair County State’s Attorney James Gomric. Prosecutors filed the first-degree murder charge while Coleman remained in custody.

Law Enforcement Agencies Involved in the Case

Multiple regional law enforcement agencies assisted the Illinois State Police throughout the cross-jurisdictional investigation. The participating departments include the East St. Louis Police Department, the St. Louis Police Department, the St. Louis City Police Department, and the Hazelwood, Missouri Police Department.

Legal Status and Presumption of Innocence

The filing of a criminal charge by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s office serves as an accusation rather than evidence of wrongdoing. Under the law, Coleman is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
