Modena Healthcare Receives €54 Million Investment for Infrastructure and Integration

Modena, Italy – A €54 million investment has been approved to bolster healthcare infrastructure and integration within the Modena region of Emilia-Romagna. The funding, secured through mortgages, will be allocated to projects spanning the Local Health Authority (ASL) and the University Hospital, addressing critical needs such as maternal-child services, operating room capacity and building safety improvements.

Financial Framework and Regional Support

The Emilia-Romagna Region, under the leadership of President Michele de Pascale, authorized the two Modena healthcare companies to take out the mortgages. This decision was based on their strong financial standing, with debt ratios below established thresholds . President de Pascale emphasized the importance of concrete investment in public health, stating that such allocations generate long-term value, reduce social costs, and foster trust between citizens and institutions.

Key Projects for the Local Health Authority (ASL)

Approximately €29 million will be directed towards projects within the Local Health Authority. A significant portion of these funds will support the creation of an integrated healthcare system in the Northern Area. An inter-district working group, involving local administrations and corporate representatives, will conduct detailed analyses to guide these initiatives, with an anticipated corporate investment of around €6 million.

An additional €20 million will be used to enhance the safety of buildings across all hospital and local health facilities, focusing on seismic adaptation and fire prevention measures, as well as modernizing building and plant assets to improve staff working conditions.

University Hospital Enhancements

The University Hospital will receive €25 million, primarily focused on improvements to the Polyclinic. €20 million will be allocated to completing the Maternal-Child building, accounting for increased costs due to recent international economic factors. A further €2 million will fund the construction of three new operating rooms, including associated changing rooms and plant upgrades.

Investments are as well planned for the Baggiovara hospital, including the construction of four new operating rooms and the addition of 42 inpatient beds. A new building will also be constructed to house clinics and medical practices.

Echocardiography and Research at the University Hospital

The University Hospital Modena Polyclinic is also a center for echocardiography research and activity. A survey conducted by the Italian Society of Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging (SIECVI) in November 2022, included data from the Polyclinic . The survey, which analyzed 228 echocardiographic laboratories across Italy, found that 179 centers (80.6%) performed stress echocardiography (SE) examinations. The University Hospital also participates in research related to antimicrobial resistance .

Further research from SIECVI in the same period showed that the University Hospital Modena Polyclinic was one of 228 echocardiographic laboratories analyzed, performing 4057 stress echocardiography examinations .
