Mohamed Abdalla Impresses at Jong Ajax, Potential First-Team Debut on the Horizon

Mohamed Abdalla has quickly made a significant impact at Jong Ajax, exceeding initial expectations, according to former coach Willem Weijs. The 16-year-old midfielder, who joined Ajax from the PSV youth academy in the summer of 2024, has demonstrated a maturity and skill level beyond his years.

Initial Doubts Quickly Dissipated

Weijs initially had reservations about Abdalla’s playing style, noting a tendency to dribble excessively at the Under 19 level. “I had doubts about his way of playing,” Weijs stated to ESPN. “At Under 19 he picked up the ball everywhere and then started a dribble. Could he also do that in the Kitchen Champion Division, I wondered?” Still, Abdalla quickly proved his ability to adapt and thrive at the second tier of Dutch professional football.

A Box-to-Box Midfielder with Strong Qualities

Abdalla’s performances led to a rapid ascent to a starting position in Jong Ajax. Weijs described him as a “box to box midfielder who combines excellent technical qualities with a strong body and dueling power.” Whereas not as creatively gifted as Abdellah Ouazane, Abdalla possesses a well-rounded skillset, including the ability to turn quickly, a good first touch, reasonable passing ability, and the strength to win duels.

Commitment to Improvement

Abdalla’s dedication to self-improvement is also noteworthy. He actively utilizes Ajax’s online system to review his own matches, seeking feedback and identifying areas for growth. “He reviewed everything and actively asked for feedback. Then he would have selected his own actions and asked what he could have done better,” Weijs explained.

Areas for Development

Despite his impressive progress, both Weijs and Abdalla recognize areas where further development is needed. These include improving defensive positioning, contributing more during transitions, and making smarter decisions about when to utilize his dribbling skills.

Potential First-Team Debut

Abdalla was included in the Ajax 1 match selection for the first time in early March, signaling his growing potential. Weijs believes a debut in the senior squad is a realistic possibility. “It seems only logical to me that he has the qualities to succeed at Ajax,” Weijs concluded.
