Monet’s Coast: The Discovery of Étretat at the Städel Museum

From March 19th to July 5th, 2026, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt will host a major exhibition, “Monet’s Coast. The Discovery of Étretat,” exploring the artistic fascination with the Norman coastal town of Étretat and its profound influence on modern painting. The exhibition centers on Claude Monet, showcasing his extensive function inspired by the unique landscape.

The Allure of Étretat

The coastal town of Étretat, with its striking cliffs and distinctive rock formations, captivated artists throughout the 19th century. The town, home to 1,200 residents, now attracts 1.5 million tourists annually. Artists were drawn to the interplay of light and sea, which transformed the landscape throughout the day. What began as a compact fishing village evolved into a popular seaside resort, attracting pioneers of modern art.

Early Artistic Explorations

Before its rise as a tourist destination, Étretat attracted artists like Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Eugène Delacroix, and Gustave Courbet. Courbet even maintained a studio directly on the beach, allowing him to closely observe and capture the power of the sea, as exemplified in his wave paintings featured in the exhibition. His work, characterized by a deliberate manipulation of perspective, inspired Claude Monet.

Monet and Étretat: A Serial Study

Claude Monet was particularly enthralled by Étretat, creating approximately 80 paintings that documented the changing light and moods of the area. The Städel Museum will feature ten of Monet’s paintings, including depictions of the Porte d’Aval and the Aiguille rock pinnacle, as the centerpiece of the exhibition, arranged in a room designed to resemble an eye. Monet’s serial approach to capturing the same subject under different conditions foreshadowed later artistic developments. He even faced a perilous situation although painting, nearly losing a canvas – and his life – to the tide.

Exhibition Details

The exhibition will showcase a total of 170 exhibits, including two works from the Städel’s own collection: Monet’s “Lunch” and Courbet’s “Woge.” These will be complemented by international loans, with 24 works by Monet alone. Contemporary photographic works by Elger Esser, created in 2000, will be displayed alongside the 19th-century paintings, creating a dialogue between different eras. The exhibition begins with an immersive, three-dimensional scan of the Étretat cliffs, created to document and preserve the coastline for future generations.
