Cork’s Matcha Scene Brews Strong with New ‘Hideout’ Café

Cork city centre welcomes a new addition to its burgeoning café culture this weekend with the opening of Moon Child, a dedicated matcha bar. Owner Monica Steenkamp, known for her popular matcha lattes at local markets, is bringing her unique flavour combinations to a permanent location on Carey’s Lane.

From Market Stall to Brick-and-Mortar

Monica Steenkamp first began serving her matcha creations at pop-up stalls in Mahon Point and Douglas farmers markets. After building a following and receiving enthusiastic feedback, she decided to establish a dedicated space for her brand, Moon Child. The café, described as an “extended pop-up,” is located upstairs at the former Cork Lotus Yoga studio reception and has been transformed into a pink-themed “secret spot” designed to immerse customers in the world of matcha.

A Growing Trend: Matcha’s Popularity in Cork

Moon Child’s arrival reflects a growing interest in matcha within Cork’s café scene. Last summer, Panda’s Matcha opened a stall at the Marina Market, offering ceremonial-grade matcha powder sourced directly from Japan. Soma Coffee Company also gained attention for hosting matcha-themed events, including a booze-free street party celebrating the popular Japanese green tea.

What to Expect at Moon Child

Moon Child will offer a menu of original hot and iced matcha drinks, alongside special flavours such as earl grey, banana bread, and jasmine. Steenkamp sources her ceremonial matcha from Your Omma. The café will initially be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm, with Steenkamp continuing to operate her stall at the Mahon Farmers Market.

Opening Details

Moon Child officially opens its doors on Saturday, February 21st. Steenkamp shared the news on TikTok, inviting customers to discover their new “favourite matcha hideout” in Cork City.
