Robert Froberg Charged in 1996 Abduction and Murder of Morgan Violi
BOWLING GREEN, KY – After nearly three decades, a suspect has been identified and charged in the 1996 abduction and death of 7-year-aged Morgan Jade Violi. Robert Scott Froberg, 61, was charged on February 26, 2026, with kidnapping resulting in death, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky. Froberg allegedly confessed to the crime after escaping from prisons in Alabama and Pennsylvania prior to the abduction.
The Case and the Confession
The announcement came during a press conference held at the Bowling Green Police Department on February 27, 2026, attended by law enforcement officials from Kentucky and Tennessee, as well as Morgan Violi’s family. United States Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner stated that Froberg confessed to abducting Morgan shortly after escaping from an Alabama prison and a subsequent escape from a Pennsylvania jail.
According to Bumgarner, Morgan fought back during the abduction, screaming and resisting. Froberg admitted to abducting Morgan from the parking lot of her apartment complex in Bowling Green on July 24, 1996, and traveling south to White House, Tennessee, where he caused her death in a wooded area before leaving her body.
Evidence Linking Froberg to the Crime
The breakthrough in the case came with advancements in DNA technology. Forensic evidence gathered in 1996 from a maroon Chevrolet van abandoned in Williamson County, Tennessee, initially provided a crucial lead. The van had been reported stolen from Dayton, Ohio, just days before Morgan’s disappearance.
A fiber found in Morgan’s hair was linked to the seat cushion of the abandoned van. Recent DNA testing of a hair strand recovered from the van ultimately connected Froberg to the crime scene. Froberg had been in custody since his arrest in 1996 for the prison breaks.
Froberg’s Criminal History
Froberg escaped from an Alabama prison on April 3, 1996, and made his way to Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania. There, on May 20, 1996, he was reported attempting to contact a 7-year-old boy in a treehouse, fleeing when police arrived. He subsequently escaped from the Northumberland County Jail in Pennsylvania on July 16, 1996, just seven days before Morgan Violi’s abduction. The stolen van was located less than half a mile from Froberg’s parents’ residence.
Legal Consequences
Froberg is charged under 18 U.S.C. § 1201, which covers kidnapping resulting in death. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or the death penalty according to the Department of Justice.
Community Impact
Officials emphasized the lasting impact of Morgan Violi’s abduction on the Bowling Green community. “For almost three decades, we have not forgotten the name Morgan Violi,” said Bowling Green Police Chief Michael Delaney. The investigation remains ongoing.
