With this post the singer-songwriter published a 3 minute and 43 minute video on his Instagram profile in which he reels off a music criticism detailed on“Italian anthem by Mameli Novaro sung by Pausini that I saw just now.”
“He sang very well, congratulations”
A few hours after the performance of the Mameli anthem by the singer from Solarolo, which divided the audience and also sparked fierce criticism, Morgan does not mince his words, defining the“completely wrong interpretation”then specifies “not because Laura Pausini he sang badly, quite the contrary, he sang it very wellvery in tune, with her style she well represented today’s Italian musicality” and for this the singer-songwriter compliments his colleague, “also because it is very difficult to be so impeccable in front of a big event of this type, she demonstrated a great level, but there is no doubt about this”.
“Transformed song”, “music suitable for a Disney context”
The problem, however, as Morgan specifies, is “having transformed that song into something absolutely non-Italianhaving modified it to the point of rendering it unrecognizable and deformed it seemed more music suited to a Disney context”.

A great story of Italian music
And again the singer-songwriter underlined how “We Italians have a great history of music who reaches the peak of his success with Giuseppe Verdi, Puccini, a little earlier with Donizetti. That is the moment that represents Italianness in the world, what is called Western tonal music, tonal harmony. Italy has a very important role in this, so much so that the great musician Roberto Schumann, in his hundred rules of musical life, says that any musician must necessarily know Italian composersbecause it is one of the fundamentals of the history of Italian music that goes back a long way, to the invention of musical notation. And this is why it still has the Italian terminology all over the world.”
“We should appropriate the Italian spirit”
Morgan specifies, therefore, that “when we have to sing a hymn with the whole world watching, we should take possession of Italianness e don’t make those without character, without personalitybecause we Italians are today in a condition of suffering from a musical point of view precisely because we are not recognized for that role, other than sovereignty”.
Modernize yes, but in the logic of the essence of Italian musicality
The singer-songwriter does not rule out the possibility “modernize” the anthem, but explains that we should “do it in the logic of the essence of Italian musicality”. And again: “There is an Italian way of orchestrating, which is not that of Walt Disney, which is not that of the John Williams of science fiction films. At most it is that of Morricone.”
Finally, he summarizes: “Today, in my opinion, it was emptied of Italianness, a symbol of the Italian nineteenth century which has a precise arrangement and harmony. Reinventing it took him in a completely non-Italian direction. So today we have not stated what it means to be Italian from a musical point of view. We have imitated something that does not belong to us.”
