Parliamentary Committee Warns NHS Mounjaro Rollout Reaches Only Six Percent of Eligible Patients

Government plans to distribute the weight-loss drug Mounjaro through the National Health Service will reach a woefully small number of people and rely on unambitious targets, MPs have warned. A report published by the Commons Health and Social Care Committee revealed that only about 6 percent of eligible patients will receive the GLP-1 medication across its initial three years, forcing millions of individuals to seek prescriptions through private healthcare providers instead. The independent.co.uk reported that the parliamentary committee urged health officials to treat obesity as a long-term, managed condition similar to diabetes, pointing out that patients frequently experience medical relapses.

Health Committee Urges Urgent Reassessment and Digital Provider Expansion

Highlighting the emergence of a two-tier system for drug access based on financial means, the parliamentary committee concluded that the Government must urgently reassess the pace of the Mounjaro rollout. The strategy should include making better use of the capacity offered by digital healthcare providers. Committee members recommended that the Department of Health and Social Care hold a summit on GLP-1 access alongside a range of providers and healthcare professionals to open a direct dialogue on improving distribution.

In June 2024, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommended Mounjaro as an option for managing overweight and obesity. The NHS subsequently estimated that 2.8 million patients would be eligible for the treatment. If all eligible individuals presented within the first year of availability, the total cost would reach £15.2 billion over five years. To manage this financial impact, Nice agreed to an NHS England request for a gradual rollout. Current plans distribute access to 220,000 people over three years, which the Health Foundation notes accounts for roughly 6 percent of those eligible under Nice guidelines.

Private Prescriptions Surpass Public Supply Amid Widening Health Inequalities

Data indicates that more than 2.37 million packs of GLP-1 medications are prescribed every month in the United Kingdom, with the vast majority accessed privately. MPs stated that people living with obesity are being let down by the NHS regarding access to both weight-loss drugs and structured support programmes. Access to GLP-1 medication increasingly depends on an individual’s ability to pay rather than their clinical need. Because obesity already follows stark lines of deprivation and inequality, failing to provide equitable access risks widening existing disparities and letting down patients who need support the most.

The report also called for improved data-sharing protocols between general practitioners and external prescribing clinicians. Lawmakers urged the Government to review the capacity and capabilities of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to determine whether it has sufficient resources to address the illegal trade in counterfeit GLP-1 treatments.

Specialised Clinics for Children Face Severe Waiting Times and High Demand

In a dedicated chapter addressing young people, the parliamentary report examined the rising demand for specialised clinics known as complications of excess weight clinics. These services are currently commissioned to evaluate between 25 and 200 young people per year. However, committee members heard that waiting times for appointments stretch to approximately six months, with active waiting lists ranging from 20 to 100 young people at a given time. In South Yorkshire alone, around 16,000 children and young people meet referral criteria, yet local services maintain capacity to support only about 100 families annually.

Layla Moran, chairwoman of the committee, stated that weight-loss jabs remain out of reach for individuals who cannot afford private care. Moran noted that a two-tier system has emerged because of limited NHS supply, inadvertently deepening health inequalities. Moran added that millions of individuals live with obesity as a chronic, relapsing condition that leads to further serious illnesses, and argued that the NHS should provide effective, structured support to beat obesity for everyone who seeks it.

Pharmacy Sector and Official NHS Responses to the Parliamentary Findings

Henry Gregg, chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, agreed that the NHS rollout remains extremely slow, leaving many patients who could benefit from treatment unable to access it. Charlotte Parker warned that overseas patent expirations will introduce generic versions of these medicines that may reach British shores through unregulated black and grey markets outside standard safeguards.
