Suspected Murder-Suicide at Bethal Police Station Involves Captain

A 53-year-old police captain stationed at the Bethal Police Station in Mpumalanga, South Africa, allegedly shot and killed a 39-year-old woman before taking his own life on Saturday, according to police reports.

Incident Details

The incident occurred in Grootvlei, Mpumalanga. The captain reportedly entered the woman’s home forcibly, after chasing her sister out. Police arrived to find both the captain and the woman deceased from gunshot wounds. A service pistol issued to the captain was found at the scene, according to police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo.

Police Investigation

Police are investigating the incident as a suspected murder-suicide. Masondo stated that the woman’s sister sought help after being chased from the home, alerting the authorities.

Official Response

Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the families of both deceased individuals. He urged police officers facing work- or family-related challenges to utilize the employee health and wellness services available to them.
