Malaysian Retailer MR.DIY Opens First Czech Store in Ostrava

Malaysian discount retailer MR.DIY opened its first Czech store at the Forum Nová Karolina shopping center in Ostrava, launching an expansion that targets over 100 locations across the country. The new branch occupies the first floor near the escalators closest to the Karolina tram stop and operates daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Offering over 10,000 distinct items, the initial inventory focuses on hardware, tools, home goods, electronics, stationery, toys, and automotive accessories.

Logistics and Expansion Strategy Across the Czech Republic

The choice of Ostrava as the starting point stems from logistics. Magdalena Nazarewicz, retail development director, explained in July to E15 that Ostrava sits close to the Polish border, allowing the company to utilize established infrastructure in Poland during initial operations. Expansion and business development manager Leoš Kocman noted in a press release that the company views the Moravian-Silesian region as a springboard for wider regional growth. Following the Ostrava launch, the company aims to open approximately 20 stores in Prague and other major cities, eventually scaling past 100 shops nationwide. The firm plans to prioritize major shopping centers before moving into retail parks and neighborhood locations once the brand gains traction.

Market Competition Among European Discount Chains

MR.DIY enters a Czech discount sector already crowded with established European players. Dutch competitor Action operates over 100 stores in the Czech Republic, while Pepco runs several hundred locations. German operator Tedi completed its 100th store in Plzeň. While rivals like Pepco and KIK emphasize apparel or seasonal decor, and Action combines household goods with basic hardware, MR.DIY leans heavier into tools and home improvement supplies. Globally, MR.DIY operates over 6,000 stores worldwide following its founding in Kuala Lumpur in 2005, outpacing Action’s 3,423 stores reported by ESM Magazine at the end of June. However, within Europe, the chain remains smaller than its established rivals, currently maintaining stores in Spain, Poland, and Romania.

European Consumers Seek Reasonable Prices and Physical Shopping

Nazarewicz noted that European consumers seek physical shopping experiences alongside reasonable prices rather than the absolute lowest cost.
