Mississippi State University Launches Online Master of Industrial Technology
Mississippi State University (MSU) is expanding its educational offerings with a new online Master of Applied Science in Industrial Technology, set to start in the fall of 2026. The program is designed to equip students with the managerial and technological skills needed for career advancement in a rapidly evolving industrial landscape.
Program Overview
The Master of Applied Science in Industrial Technology, housed within the College of Education’s Department of Technology, Leadership, and Design, builds upon the foundation of MSU’s existing industrial technology bachelor’s degree. It aims to prepare students for industrial management positions and provide a pathway for technical educators to pursue leadership roles. MSU Newsroom
Specialization Options
The program offers three distinct specializations, allowing students to tailor their education to their specific career goals:
- Industrial Management: This specialization focuses on advanced technological skills in areas such as data science, business analytics, smart manufacturing, systems integration, and predictive maintenance, alongside traditional manufacturing knowledge like production control and lean six sigma.
- Community College Leadership for Technical Programs: Designed for those seeking administrative roles or teaching positions in the industrial technology field.
- Instructional Design for Technical Programs: This specialization aims to enhance the skills of technical educators and industry trainers in designing effective learning experiences.
Addressing Workforce Needs
According to Lara Threet, instructor and program coordinator, the program was developed in response to a growing demand for advanced degrees among students and alumni. “With the workforce trending toward higher degree requirements for management positions, we saw a necessitate…We are excited to meet this need and equip our students with cutting-edge manufacturing, data analytics and project management skills to serve America’s modern-age industries.” MSU Newsroom
Program Distinctiveness
MSU’s program stands out nationally due to its fully online format and the availability of all three specializations. “There are several programs across the nation that offer a version of the industrial management concentration, but few are fully online and none offer opportunities in all three specializations,” said Threet.
