Badminton Court Lines Removed at Washburn University, Temporary Markers Provided

Washburn University students expressed disappointment after the removal of permanent badminton court lines during a renovation of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) this past winter break. While the university cites low participation numbers and the rising popularity of pickleball as reasons for the change, students – particularly international students – emphasize the sport’s cultural significance and health benefits. The SRWC has provided a temporary solution in the form of rubber line markers available for checkout.

Background and Student Concerns

The SRWC previously featured two badminton courts with marked lines. But, following flooring renovations in 2026, these lines were removed. Josie Riddle, a junior graphic design major, questioned the decision, stating, “It might be because badminton is not as popular as pickleball but it has been around longer than pickleball. People have been playing badminton…they shouldn’t just get rid of the court.”

Students highlighted the importance of proper court markings for both singles and doubles play, noting that the intramural badminton tournament doesn’t fully adhere to official rules without them. Sumika Karmacharya, a freshman nursing major, explained that badminton is an accessible sport for staying active, while Yashneil Shrestha, a freshman computer science major, shared that playing badminton was a positive experience upon arriving at Washburn and its removal was unexpected. Shrestha noted the importance of badminton in his home country.

University Response and Temporary Solution

Whitney Slater, director of the SRWC, acknowledged student feedback, explaining that the decision was based on facility usage patterns and growing trends in recreation participation. From 2022-2025, only 30 students participated in intramural badminton tournaments according to the SRWC. At the same time, pickleball has seen a significant increase in popularity.

Slater also explained that applying tape directly to the gym floor could cause damage. To address the concerns of badminton players, the SRWC has purchased temporary rubber line markers. These markers, along with instructions for setting up courts for both singles and doubles play, are available for checkout in a black drawstring bag at the front desk as stated by the SRWC.

Looking Ahead

While pickleball continues to gain traction, badminton remains a valued activity for many Washburn students. The temporary court markers offer a short-term solution, but students hope for the potential return of permanent court lines in the future. For now, students plan to continue playing and utilizing the available resources to enjoy the sport.
